Chemistry



The research I did to create this diagram was basically looking at my old blog posts and finding what we did before, and then translating it onto this bubbl.us doc. For the reactions, I used the examples from the Chemical Party, and in the whole diagram I included the basic stuff we learned.

Nitrogen Article

1. The three chemicals used in the growth of plants: nitrogen, prohsphorus and potassium.

2. The three plants that can use N2 are soybeans, peas and clover. They are able to use it because they have a symbiotic bacteria growing in their roots. Thos bacteria have a rare ability to convert N2 into chemically usable form.

3. Nitrogen is either present as ammonia (NH3) or the ammonium
ion (NH4+) in soil or a fertilizer.

4. Nitrogen makes up 80% of the air.

5. Nitrogen can harm the environment in a way being released out and the nitrogen that had been released forms compounds that can cotribute to our changing climate and create conditions that would cause the loss of fish and other marine life. Also, when there is too much nitrogen leaking out,or there's too much being used, it doesn't go back in the atmosphere, and instead it causes the environmental pollution.

6. Scientists are breeding new crops that would live for many years. This way, farmers would not have to grow them again every year and, as a result, would use less fertilizer, which would reduce the use of nitrogen and would result with less environmental pollution.


The connection between this article and the water one is that both have a huge impact on the world and the environmental pollution. Water is needed for many purposes including food, and nitrogen is needed for growing plants and food. If there wasn't for the nitrogen, we would have a lot of trouble with growing crops, and if it wasn't for water, we would die of thirst.

Structure of Matter

1. The ocean - salt water, plants, sand, fish, planktons
2. Sea water - salt, water (experiment: evaporation of the water and then observing if there is salt left)
3. Beach sand - primarily quartz, chert, igneous rock and shell fragments (experiment: dividing everything on seperate piles and observing what you found)
4. Salt - chloride and sodium ions (experiment: using electricity to break down the sodium ions and chloride)
5. Silicon - carbon, oxygen, hydrogen
6. Chlorine - salt
7. Protons - baryon, two up quarks and one down quark
8. Electrons - no known components - believed to be an elementary particle

Octet rule and other models

"The octet rule is a simple chemical rule of thumb that states that atoms tend to combine in such a way that they each have eight electrons in their valence shells, giving them the same electronic configuration as a noble gas." Also, the octet rule is a way to predict what kind of ion an atom will form.

"The Bohr model despicts the atom as a small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by electrons that travel in circular orbits around the nucleus—similar in structure to the solar system, but with electrostatic forces providing attraction, rather than gravity." The Bohr model was devised by Niels Bohr. The model isn't very accurate, but very useful in today's experiments.

Lewis structures are diagramms which show the bonding of atoms of an molecule with the ione pairs of electrions that may or may not exist. The Lewis structure may also be called the Lewis Dot Diagrams, electron dot diagrams, and electron dot structures.

Green Plastics

Bio plastics are being produced and developed from biomass sources, meaning vegetable oil, corn starch, etc. Those kinds of plastic can be melted down and renewed, for further use. These kinds of plastic are "green" because they are not harming our planet, nor being a part of cause of global warming. These plastics can be used again and again. In that video, there were a few types of reactions mentioned: Condenstation reaction, Addition reaction, and Polymerization.
